Why did we write the book

CorporatEdge has introduced a new division called CorporatEdge Outdoors. This division is directed towards encouraging people to hike; specially in the Central Matheran Region for fun, health and fitness. We undertake guided hikes through this region for corporates which brings about a sense of camaraderie and builds team spirit.

To promote hiking and to encourage those who would like to hike on their own, Rohinton Mehta, my husband and I, have written a book on trekking in the Central Matheran region titled ’Matheran a mountaineering manual – 60 hiking & trekking routes along with Swati Mahajan.

Matheran – A Mountaineering Manual explores and delineates 60 hiking and trekking routes to Matheran in great depth and detail.

This 248 page book contains 10 meticulously hand drawn original maps and gives practical tips for climbing Matheran from every possible direction, from across every neighbouring mountain and from every base village.  Each route is classified based on Technical difficulty the hiker will face on the hike as well as the Endurance levels needed by the hiker to complete the hike.  This will help each hiker to choose the route best suited for his / her own current abilities and motivate them to aspire towards the more challenging routes.

Reading about the many routes and studying the map will thoroughly prepare you for your hike in Matheran whether you are a first time hiker or a veteran hiker.  There’s something for every hiker in this book including the aspirational hiker.

This book is divided into 8 Chapters and includes thoroughly researched data inter alia using advanced satellite imagery on not only the 60 mountaineering routes but also on the flora, fauna, terrain and topography of Matheran and its base villages.  The book contains an extensive Bibliography and a perfectly constructed Index for ease of cross reference.

This book is bound to bring great joy, thrill and exhilaration to not only new comers to trekking but also set up challenges to the extremely mature and technically experienced mountaineers.

This book took the 3 authors about four years to complete, as it required a lot of networking with other senior mountaineers and mountaineering clubs and even with the local villagers and guides residing in the base villages.  Each and every route delineated in this Manual has been personally climbed by at least one of the authors themselves or their close mountaineering club associates.
